Brigadier General Arthur S. Nevins is interred along with his Wife, Ann S. Nevins, and his Son, Sergeant Arthur S. Nevins, Jr., in Section 3 of the Gettysburg National Cemetery.


OBITUARY FOR GENERAL ARTHUR S. NEVINS

GEN. NEVINS DIES FRIDAY AT AGE OF 87

Brigadier General Arthur Seymour Nevins of Gettysburg died on Friday at about 4:30 PM in San Antonio, Texas.

Gen. Nevins was born July 19, 1891 in Camp Point, Adams County, Illinois, son of Joseph Allan and Emma S. Nevins.

He received his early education in Camp Point schools.

In 1913, he graduated with a degree in civil engineering from the University of Illinois.

He joined the U.S. Army in 1917 and began a distinguished 29 year military career.

During his years with the Army, he was awarded: Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Bronze Star, and decorations from Great Britain, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, Poland, and Russia.

While he was in the Army, he graduated from the Infantry School, the Command and General Staff School, and the Army War College.

During World War II, he served on staff of the Supreme Allied Commander, Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower.

This relationship continued after the war, and in the early 1950s Gen. Nevins came to Gettysburg to become manager of the Eisenhower Farm.

Gen. Nevins had been a member of the Gettysburg College Board of Associates.

He married the former Anne Louise Stacy of Springfield, Illinois, in August of 1917.

In addition to Mrs. Nevins, their two children survive, a daughter, Dr. Mary Ann Radzinowicz, a fellow at Girion College, and lecturer at Cambridge U., England, and a son, Arthur S. Nevins, Jr., of Lexington, Ky., a television producer. Two grandchildren are also among the survivors.

His brother, famed historian Allan Nevins, died in 1971.

Funeral arrangements by the Monahan Funeral Home, Gettysburg, are incomplete.

Duty with the 57th Infantry in the Philippines July 1920 - January 1923. Assistant professor of military science and tactics at the University of Illinois April 1923 - August 1925. Instructor at the Infantry School July 1928 - August 1931. Graduated from the Command and General Staff School in 1933 and the Army War College in 1936. Again in the Philippines 1936 - 1939. Instructor at the Command and General Staff School October 1939 - August 1940. Deputy Chief of Staff of VIII Corps 1940 - 1942. In the plans division of the War Department General Staff in 1942. Brigadier General in December 1942. Assistant Chief of Staff of Fifth Army January - October 1943. Deputy Chief of Staff for intelligence at SHAEF (Supreme Headquarters, Allied Expeditionary Forces) October 1943 - January 1945, then chief of the plans and operations section 1945 - 1946. Reverted to Colonel in March 1946. Retired in August 1946. Decorations included the Distinguished Service Medal, two Legions of Merit, and the Bronze Star. Died on January 19, 1979.
