"...Mrs. Wilbur James Ray and Mrs. Olin A. Sims, all of Beeville, and Mrs. Mildred (W. H. Maddux) of Pharr, a brother, Ed Thornton of Haskell and four sisters, Mrs. Mattie Gatlin of Arizona, Mrs. W. A. Stephens of Ft. Worth, Mrs. Quida Heffner of Clinton, Okla. and Mrs. Annie Moore of Killeen. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Mr. Thornton was a native of Alabama, having been born at Union Springs, March 7, 1861. He was married to Miss Lena Davis-Sampson at San Antonio on July 1, 1903. To this union one son was born, but Mrs. Thornton tenderly mothered the four daughters and one son of her husband by his former wife, the former Miss Nannie Lee, who died in 1895.
He was preceeded in death by the second Mrs. Thornton on Oct. 2, 1935.
Mr. Thornton was deputy sheriff under the late John E. Wilson who served as Sheriff and tax collector of Bee County from 1900 until 1910, at which time he was elected tax collector. Mr. Thornton was then elected Sheriff of Bee County and served from 1910 until 1920. He was known as an efficient and fearless peace officer."
