Victor R. Hughes age 78 of Ottawa, Kansas passed away Sunday, June 1, 2008 at the Christian Care Cottage in Ottawa, Kansas.

He was born February 6, 1930 in Wellsville, Kansas the son of Carl Frankie and Esther (Leonard) Hughes. He graduated from the Wellsville High School in 1948. He attended Ottawa University.

He was united in marriage to Freda E. Fletcher on July 28, 1951 in Garnett, Kansas. They shared over fifty-five years of marriage before the death of his wife on December 20, 2006.

Vic worked for the Gas Service Company before serving our country during the Korean Conflict as a Surgical Orderly in the United States Army Medical Service. He was honorably discharged in October of 1952.

He worked a milk route for Bennett's Creamery and later for Mid America Dairyman in Ottawa. He was employed with the City of Ottawa at the Highland Cemetery until his retirement. The past years, he worked for Evans Emery D & E Exploration Company in Gardner, Kansas and enjoyed running oil wells.

He was a member of the Williamsburg United Methodist Church and the Ottawa Council No. 18, Royal and Select Masons. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, finding arrowheads and mushrooms, raising cattle, and spending time with his family and grandchildren.

He is survived by two sons, Randy Hughes of Williamsburg, Kansas and his companion, Vicki Holt of Ottawa, Kansas and Russell Hughes and his wife Patricia of Fort Scott, Kansas; his brother, Roger Hughes and his wife Beatrice of Wellsville, Kansas; five grandchildren, Robert, Colin, Victor, John and Ashley Hughes.

Mr. Hughes was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; three brothers, Stanley, Gordon and Warren Hughes; and his sister, Shirley Cost.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 4, 2008 at the Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home in Ottawa, Kansas. Interment will follow at the Highland Cemetery in Ottawa, Kansas. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions to Midland Hospice or to the Christian Care Cottage and may be sent to the Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home, 325 S. Hickory, P.O. Box 14, Ottawa, Kansas 66067.
