Gilbert W. Brill, 92, Topeka, passed away on Tuesday, October 20, 2009 at a local hospital.

Gilbert was born July 23, 1917 in Topeka, the son of Frank R. and Mable (Franz) Brill. He graduated from Topeka High School and attended Washburn University.

He entered the U.S. Army in 1941, serving during the Berlin Crisis in World War II and served in both the European Theater and Asiatic Pacific Theater. After the war, he continued in the Army Reserve for 30 years, retiring at the rank of Colonel in 1977.

He was a Police officer with the Topeka Police Department, serving 24 years, retiring with the rank of Major. He later worked as an automotive salesman with Ed Bozarth-Shortman Dodge and Lewis Toyota and finally as Superintendent of Ports and Entry for the State of Kansas, retiring in 1980.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Masonic Lodge #980, York Rite, Scottish Rite, Arab Shrine Clowns, TROA, ROA, Moose Lodge, Kansas Police Officers Association, Association of the United States Army, Fraternal Order of Police, Kansas National Guard Association, Active Prime Timers, and Retired City Employees. He organized the Retired Topeka Police Officers for dinner meetings twice a year for 18 years. He volunteered in Cardiac Rehabilitation at the Veterans Administration Hospital for 10 years and had coached girl's softball for 25 years.

Gilbert married Lucille Helberg on January 17, 1942 in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include daughter, Sally L. Deghand, Topeka; granddaughters, Michelle R. Kern, and husband Mark, Lawrence, Jami L. Deghand, Topeka; great grandchildren, Emilee Kern, Haylee Kern, Bradyn Kern; nephew, Jerry Helberg; niece, Sandra Armstrong, Nancy Givens; and his faithful cat, Ezmerelda "Ezzy". He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Brill-Maday; and brother, Clifford Wayne Brill.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, October 26, 2009 at Trinity Lutheran Church.

Entombment will follow in the Mount Hope Mausoleum.

Gilbert will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel after 2:00 p.m. on Sunday and visitation will be from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.
