Major Benjamin Franklin Wade, 20th Engineers, HQ Co., was the commander of the almost 2,200 American soldiers aboard the troopship "Tuscania" when it was torpedoed & sunk on 5 February 1918 in the North Channel between Scotland & Ireland by German submarine UB-77. There were approximately 215 casualties.

He returned from World War I aboard the "Zeelandia" in December 1918.

On the "Tuscania," he listed his wife, Mrs. Benjamin F. Wade, 827 "S" Street, Washington, D.C., as his next-of-kin. On his return voyage, her name appeared as Mrs. B.F. Wade, Laurel, Maryland.

James Franklin Wade, his father, was a general in the Union Army in the Civil War. His grandfather, also named Benjamin Franklin Wade, was a U.S. Senator during the Civil War, serving as president pro tempore of the Senate during President Andrew Johnson's impeachment procedures.

Johnson was not removed from office by one vote, and so Benjamin's grandfather failed to become the President of the United States. There was no vice president because Johnson had succeeded to the presidency following the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, and the Senate's president pro tempore was next in line.
