The family homesteaded three miles East of Meadow. She attended school at Grand Central School and a year in Lemmon. She worked in the Lemmon/Meadow areas as a housekeeper, sewing, and babysitting.
Anna married Emil Hofer in Bison, SD, on July 30, 1938. After the wedding they went back to the Hofer homestead near the Athboy/ Meadow area to start their new life. There they raised their two children, Len and Duane.
Anna enjoyed gardening, raising flowers, and canning. She shared most of the produce with friends and neighbors. She also loved to cook and bake. She decorated many wedding, anniversary, and birthday cakes for family and friends. She also enjoyed drawing pictures which she did often. Anna raised the chickens, pigs, and sheep on the family ranch as well as helping with the haying, loving to run the swather, and helping with the calving. A great cook, she enjoyed serving big meals at her home to neighbors and family during branding time and to hunting friends.
She was also the Secretary of the Black Horse Creek Saddle Club, which was instrumental in the founding on the first Boss Cowman Rodeo. Emil and Anna were the Honorees of the Celebration in 1988. She was a member of St. Luke Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lemmon.
Anna and Emil loved to travel. They spent winters in Arizona which became their second home for many years. In 1999, Anna and Emil moved to an apartment in Lemmon.
She loved her children, grandchildren, and extended family very much. Survivors include her husband, Emil of Lemmon; two sons, Len (Darlys) of Meadow, and Duane (Frankie) of Rapid City, SD; three grandchildren, Doug Hofer of McIntosh, Kim (Gary) Hartung of Rozet, WY, and Krista Hofer of Rapid City; one sister Marie (Jim) Daley, Thunderhawk, SD, and sister-in-law Annie Adamek of San Diego, CA.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Albina Hammer and Julia Tepley; and four brothers, Joseph, Louis, Adolph, and Victor.
Casket bearers include Gary Hartung, Jim Hellekson, Mike Hofer, Mitch Daley, Ray Schopp, and Robert Rieger.
Funeral services are scheduled for Friday, June 15 at St. Luke Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lemmon. Pastor Frank Gantt will officiate, and interment will be in the Gallaway Cemetery near Meadow.
