Charles was a farmer in Calhoun County, Illinois. His wife, Muriel, held a variety of jobs over the years, in addition to her duties as a homemaker. She was the postmaster of Golden Eagle for many years, taught school for a time and was the owner and operator of Macauley Restaurant in Kampsville for 27 years.
The Macauleys sold their business in Kampsville and took a month-long vacation in Mexico in early 1950. Charles then returned to farming at their home in Golden Eagle.
At the time of his death at St. Mary's Health Care Center, Charles was 80 years and 13 days old. He was survived by his wife, Muriel; 2 daughters, Barbara Bird of San Antonio, Texas, and Mary James of Ferguson; 2 sons, Thomas of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and James of Golden Eagle; 13 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; 1 sister, Marie Kinder of Golden Eagle; and 1 brother James, also of Golden Eagle.
In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by a grandson, Danny James.
Visitation was held after 4 p.m. on 29 Sep 1982 at Hanks Funeral Home in Hardin. A rosary was recited that evening at 7:30 p.m. A funeral Mass was conducted at 10 a.m. the following morning at St. Anselm's Catholic Church in Kampsville.
The family requested that memorials, if desired, be made to the Diabetes Foundation.
Charles' wife, Muriel, passed away in 1997.
