Thomas J. Brown and his wife, Margaret Hartless,were married about 1830 in Allegheny County,Pennsylvania. They were among the first settlers of McCalmont Township in Jefferson county,Pennsylvania,when they came here in 1838,settling in what is now the village of Panic. They were both members of the United Brethren Church. Their final resting places were a part of the original family homestead & farm.
They were the parents of these known children:
~ Moses Brown;
~ Mary Brown;
~ Job/Joseph Brown;
~ Daniel Brown;
~ Margaret Brown;
~ William Brown;
~ Barbara Ann Brown;
~ Thomas J. Brown;
~ Susanna Brown;
~ Emily Brown;
~ George Brown;
~ Jacob Reslar Brown;
~ Sarah Catherine Brown.
Sources:
~ The Commemorative Record of Central Pennsylvania,pages 1307-1308.
~ 1840,1850,1860,1870 Jefferson County,Pennsylvania census records.
Note:
The Commemorative Biographical of Central Pennsylvania also states that his death date was 13 September 1868;we believe that that is an incorrect year because his 2nd wife,Catherine,was remarried shortly after Thomas's death in 1878.
The dates on this stone are worn & hard to read although the year of death is still quite clear to read,otherwise the dates have been verified via other records of the times.
One census record states his birth in New York,all other records state Pennsylvania as his birth place.
Note-
Regarding his son,George Brown 1848 - 1914;his death certificate states his mother as Elizabeth Shuterly [sic] Brown;which in turn poses the questions of what happened to her.
