John Mutius Gaines, was a surgeon in Gen. Robert E. Lee's army "and served throughout the duration of the war with distinction. John Mutius was twice made prisoner. He was left in charge of the wounded after the battle of South Mountain and Gettysburg.Grandson of Reuben and Lucy Barbour Moore Gaines. Died age 77 yrs. John Mitius Gaines was the 2nd son born to Edwin Ruthven Gaines and Mary Slaughter Jury Gaines.
