SSGT US Air Force WWII and Korea

Wallace Alden Cook, 88, formerly of Downing, MO, passed away March 23, 2007, in the Scotland County Care Center in Memphis, MO, where he had been a resident for approximately one year.

The son of Dennis A. and Lillian B. (Wentworth) Cook, he was born on July 31, 1918 in North Belgrade, ME.

On July 10, 1959, he was united in marriage to Sylvia Ozeta Jackson, who preceded him in death on July 3, 1984. On June 18, 1985, in Memphis, MO, he was united in marriage to Freda (Snodgrass) Lay.

Wallace was in the CCC's North Chatten in New Hampshire from September 1936 until May 1937 and then enlisted in the United States Army for two years, seven months and 18 days and was discharged on June 22, 1940. On July 5, 1940 he enlisted in the United States Air Force and was discharged on March 31, 1958. During this time Wallace served during World War II. He was a member of the American Legion of Queen City, MO and the Air Force Sergeant Association. Wallace was also a member of the Fabius Baptist Church, east of Lancaster, MO.

Survivors include his wife, Freda Cook of the Scotland County Care Center in Memphis, MO; one step-son, Samuel Lay and wife, Colene of Monticello, MO; four step-grandsons; four step-granddaughters; 10 step-great-grandchildren; eight step-great-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Clarence Alton Cook, Russell Elwin Cook and wife, Mildred and Alfred Royal Cook and wife, Donna and many nieces and nephews.

Wallace was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Sylvia; one step-daughter, Betty (Watson) Williams; three sisters, Doris B., Mildred E. Knapp, and Geraldine Pearl Wishart; and five brothers, Charles Lawrence, Dennis Alfred, Harold Clifford, Milford Ernest, and Richard Philip.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 29, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. at the Norman Funeral Home in Downing, MO, with Leon Buford, assistant pastor of the Pentecostal Church of Memphis, MO, officiating. Music will be provided by Ruth and Rick Addison. Pallbearers will be James Cook, Randy Antal, Bob Maze, John Mark Antal, Greg Lay, and Randy Lay. Honorary pallbearers will be Max Snodgrass and Phil Duley. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Military rites will be held by the Scotland County VFW Post #4958. Memorials have been established for the Scotland County Care Center or the Schuyler County Nutrition Site. Burial will be in the Downing Cemetery, Downing, MO. Arrangements are under the direction of the Norman Funeral Home of Downing, MO
