Husband of Frances L. Rhoads Morley. He was an archeologist in Mexico.

"Through the help of the New Mexico state historian and the University of New Mexico and University of Texas, . . . the Mayan hieroglyphics on the grave stones for Sylvanus Morley and Frances R[hoads] Morley stand for the 18th of the Mayan month of PAX and hers 1 Uo or 1 Zip. These have no relation to birth or death, so maybe something from the expeditions of the 1910's, 20's and 30's to Mexico & Guatemala or his publications on the Mayan culture." -Candis Bourassa

Sylvanus Griswold Morley is a famous Anthropologis, epigrapher, Mayanist scholar, and World War One Secret Agent (Number 53). He is a real Tomb Hunter. Above he is at Copan, Honduras, in 1912. His SPY story appeared in the HISTORY CHANNEL's "The Real Tomb Hunters: Snakes, Curses, and Booby Traps."

Wikipedia has an article on this FAMOUS Sylvanus Morley who is buried here.

Sylvanus Griswold Morley is the son of Benjamin Franklin Morley + Sarah Elnor Constance (De Lannoy) Morley. He married twice. His first wife was Alice Gallinger Williams and his second wife was Frances Rose Lou Rhoads.

Note: His cousin, Sylvanus was born Sylvanus Griswold Small to Sarah Elizabeth (Morton) Small + Herbert Morley Small, son of Sumner Small + Eliza Morley and Sarah Elizabeth Morton. His cousin's mother hated the name Sarah, which she never used and in 1898 his cousin's father legally changed his name to Herbert Small Morley and the family now carried the last name of Morley instead of Small, resulting in two Sylvanus Griswold Morleys in this generation. His cousin, Sylvanus mentions this fact in his autobiography.
