SERVICES MONDAY FOR CHARLES ANDERSON
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the First Lutheran Church of Varna, for Charles E. Anderson, a life-long Varna resident, who passed away suddenly about 11 o'clock Thursday morning, September 6, 1956, following an apparent heart attack. He had been helping shell corn that morning on the Joe Rinaldo farm, owned by Lawrence Fairbanks in Hopewell township, when he was stricken without warning, and passed away before medical help could be summoned. Coroner Roy O. Brown was called, and after an inquiry, pronounced it coronary thrombosis. Mr. Anderson had suffered a few previous milder attacks in past years, but had not been under medical care for some time.
The Rev. Orville K. Bossee, Th.D., pastor of the church, officiated at Monday's services, which began with a brief preliminary service of Scripture and prayer at the Anderson home in Varna, and concluded with interment in the parish cemetery (First Lutheran Cemetery #1) north of the village, of which Mr. Anderson had been caretaker for something over 10 years past.
Pallbearers were Elmer Flesburg, Maynard Austin, Elmer and Herbert Walin, Raymond Carlson, and Louis Phillips. Ushers for the church service were Grant Flesburg and Wayne Lundgren.
The Boose Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
LIFELONG VARNA RESIDENT
Mr. Anderson was born in Roberts township November 24, 1874, and with the exception of brief periods in adjoining townships, spent his entire life of over 81 years in the Varna community.
He was the fifth of eleven children of the late Swan M. and Emma Nelson Anderson: the late Hilma (Mrs. Victor) Carlson, formerly of Peoria; Albert, also deceased, for many years the rural mail carrier in Varna; Josephine
(Mrs. Charles) Fritz of Peoria; the late Frank, formerly of Cambridge; Charles of this sketch, Emma (Mrs. Anton)
Wahlquist, who passed away in Peoria many years ago, the first of the family to do so; Andrew of Galva; Phoebe
(Mrs. Conrad) Anderson, deceased, also formerly of Peoria; Lawrence of Galva; Elmer of Galesburg; and Wilbert of Westmont, IL.
Most of his life was spent farming, first on his parents' farm until after their passing, many years ago, and since that time, in various places in and around the Varna community.
His marriage to Miss Ellen Hultgren, only daughter of the late Nels A. and Ida S. Lindstrom Hultgren, took place in Varna on December 12, 1940.
Survivors include his wife; the sister and four brothers mentioned earlier in this sketch; and several nieces and nephews and other relatives, and a large number of friends made during his lifetime in the Varna community.
Many of them called at the Anderson home in Varna Saturday evening, Sunday, and until the hour of the service Monday afternoon and the church itself was well filled for the service there.
