Martha Melvina Poteet was the only child of Larkin Poteete and his second wife, Telitha Melvina Coats Smith Poteet. She married Jesse Lee Atkins on 28 Aug 1879 in Perry Co., AR. After his death in 1890, she and her son James E. and daughter Lettie moved to Little Rock, Pulaski Co., AR. After her son James E. died of influenza in 1918 and his wife died in 1919 of cancer, Martha Melvina "Babe" raised their three surviving children. Her daughter Letty married, but did not have children and was widowed at a young age, so she helped her mother raise the orphaned children of her brother James. "Babe" made frequent trips back to Perry and Yell Co., AR, to visit her family and her husband's family. She was loved by all and led a full life devoted to her daughter Letty and her grandchildren.
