Andrew Andersen was born in Hasle, Aarhus, Denmark n 1862. His father was Anders Nielsen (born Aug. 28, 1825 in Hasle, Denmark) and his mother was Ane Elizabeth Pedersen (born Feb. 16, 1827 in Gjern, Denmark). He had seven brothers and sisters named Niels, Peder, Anne Marie, Anders, Ane, Maren and Niels. As a teenager he and his family joined the Mormon Church. On October 17th, 1884,he left Denmark to join his brother Niels in Utah. He traveled from Aarhus to Copenhagen on a steamboat, where he took another steamboat to Hull, England. From Hull he traveled by train to Liverpool, and from there took a large steamship to New York. From New York he traveled by train to Utah, where he met up with his brother Neils Andersen in Spring City. He later moved to Salem, Idaho where he married Maren Hansen, another Danish immigrant. They had two children, Andrew and Annie. Andrew's wife Maren suffered from mental illness, and when the children were young she was hospitalized in the state mental hospital. Andrew moved to Blackfoot, Idaho to be near her, but eventually her condition worsened and she was institutionalized for the rest of her life. Andrew moved to Utah to do missionary work, and his final year was spent doing temple work at the St. George, Utah Temple.
