Abner was a carpenter. He was working on the Mount Anthony House in Bennington, Vermont when he fell from the scaffolding and broke his back in 1866. The injuries confined him to bed for the remainder of his life. According to a story in the Vermont Record (Brandon, Vermont)on November 10, 1866, Abner and Sally had three children. The youngest daughter died in 1866 before Abner's accident, and his wife and only son died shortly after the accident. Another daughter was the last member of the family. The Mount Anthony House burned down in November, 1868.
