Philipp was born in Neudorf, (Karamoanoval), Tiraspol Cherson, Ukraine, S. Russia to Johannes Jacob and Julianne (Henne) Bentz. This was a German family, possibly immigrating from the Alsace region which today is a German speaking section of France. They immigrated along with thousands of other Germans to South Russian near the Black sea through the invitation of Catherine The Great, a German Princess who became spouse to a Russian Tzar. When Catherine's influence faded in Russia, so did the favor for the German folk around the Black sea and because of the growing oppression from the Russian Authorities, these German folk began to respond to the American Railroad advertisements that were spreading across the world and came to Dakota Territory. When land began to open in Gregory County, the Bentz family crossed the river and we find Philipp's family settling a few miles south of Dallas on a farm

Philipp married Christina Grosshans and they had seven children while living in Neudorf, S. Russia (Christian, Julianna, Katharina, Johann, Peter, Jakob and Elisabeth). Christian, Julianna and Katharina did not survive childhood and died during their toddler years.
