Daughter of the late John Herman and Bessie Allen Rouse Dawson, she was the widow of Desmond Burgess. Additionally, she was preceded in death by two children, Terry Dean Burgess and Joseph Herman Barnes. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Elizabeth City, NC. She was survived by a daughter, Teresa Overman; four grandchildren, Melanie Barnes, Melissa Wilbur and her husband Rick, Leigh Overman and his wife Tasha, Jessica Deane Overman; three great-grandchildren, Desmond Overman, Dakota Spence and Megan Wilbur; and close friend, Crystal Spence. Her graveside service was held October 29, 2009, with The Rev. Jerry Mitchell officiating.
