William was born in Shipton, Quebec, Canada, He served in the Civil War 2nd Regiment, New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry- Company F. He was a sharpshooter for his Company. March 20th, 1866 in Ste Foy, Quebec he married Susan Ann McKie, daughter of Robert McKie & Elisabeth Murray. Shortly after their marriage they immigrated to Harrison County, Iowa. The couple had 2 children Emily Marinda "Emma" 1868-1937 and Amelia (1870-1870) William's occupation was a carpenter. He died from an illness that he contracted while serving in the Civil War.
William's parents were Moses Emerson, born May 25, 1797 at Wolfboro, New Hampshire and Marenda "Marcia" Leet who was born April 1798 in New Hampshire. Moses and Marenda were married April 10, 1820 in Shipton, Richmond County, Quebec Canada. Moses died May 29, 1846 at Shipton,
Sherebrooke, Quebec Canada and Marenda died Oct. 1, 1862 at Shipton, Richmond County, Canada. Both are buried at Castlebar Cemetery in Shipton, Richmond County, Quebec.
