Mrs. Nehrling was born in Curtis, Wisc. After graduating from the University of Minnesota, she was an associate professor in the College of Home Economics at Cornell University
She wrote articles about food for "The New Butterick Cook Book," "American Cookery" and other publications and, with her late husband Arno H. Nehrling, former executive director of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, wrote several books on gardening.
A resident of Needham for 50 years before moving to Delaware, she was a former member of the boards of directors of the Girl Scouts, the Needham Visiting Nurse Association and the New England Wildflower Society.
She leaves a son, A. Herbert Jr. of Lewes, Del; a daughter, Dorothy Higgins of Meadowbrook, Pa.; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A private graveside service will be held in Needham Cemetery
