Dowl David Harris; age 75, was born in Glade Spring, Virginia to Albert Wright Harris and Elizabeth Alberta Crosswhite Harris. He was married to Hazel Yvonne Halterman from Jan. 2, 1948 until 1961. They had three daughters: Gloria Darlene, Patricia Dale and Joy Carol. He later married Doris Grant Wood and was stepfather to her two children, Mark and Brenda.

Dowl was the eldest of seven children. His sisters and brothers were: Gloria Christine, Billie Dove, Clara Bow, Jackie Wright, Harvey Donnie "Joe" and Junior Wright.

Dowl worked for the Virginia Department of Highways and Transportation for 44 years, retiring as Asst. Location and Design Engineer. He was the full-time coordinator for the 75-mile-long Interstate 66 project that was a vital link between the Shenandoah Valley and D.C. This project was the first major interstate project constructed under the Environmental Protection Act of 1969.

Dowl served in WWII and was in the National Guard for 26 years. He was a member of the Moose Lodge.

Dowl was a very likeable person and had several nicknames: D.D., Sarge, Whitey, Boss. The most important name he had though was Daddy. He was father to his adoring three girls.

His grandchildren are Karen Denise Hege, Michael William Treadway, Jr., Timothy Ryan Crabtree and Sarah Elizabeth Kammerer. Five months before his death, Dowl became a great-grandfather to his first great-grandchild, Christopher Hal Kammerer.
