Sketch On The Life Of William H. Krutsinger
William Henry Krutsinger was born September 7, 1838 in Orange County, Indiana. He was baptized by George H. Han in 1857 at the age of nineteen. While living in Bedford, Indiana, he taught at Bedford Male and Female College, under the presidency of J.M. Mathes, 1874. The next year he was Co-Editor with W.B. Crisler of the Common School Teacher Magazine. He later operated a school of preaching at Ellettsville, Indiana. For a period of time he was Query Editor for the American Christian Review. He worked for years in Ellettsville and also Bloomington. He died in Bloomington, Indiana on August 21, 1916.
Born and reared in Orange County, Ind., William Henry Krutsinger grew up working on a farm but loving books. In 1857, George H. Han immersed him into Christ at Carter's Creek. In 1858, he preached his first sermon, taking Romans 6:23 as his text. Krutsinger's first wife died during childbirth less than a year into their marriage. Their baby was stillborn. "They dug her grave deep," Krutsinger wrote, "and gently lowered her corpse and that of the babe into the vault. ... The Bible was a deep, consoling comfort in these lonely days of sore bereavement." Krutsinger traveled often with the noted J. L. Martin, who wrote an influential commentary on Revelation, Voice of the Seven Thunders.
In the early 1880s, Krutsinger established his Preacher Training School in Ellettsville, Ind. Among his better known students were A.G. Freed, A.E. Freeman, W.M. Davis, F.L. Rowe, H. H. Adamson, Ben F. Taylor, F.L. Rowe, L.M. Jackson, D.S. Ligon, Horace Pleasant Hinds and Shannon D. Baker.
Krutsinger was a frequent contributor to the Gospel Advocate, and in the late 1880s, he served as an associate editor. In 1906 and 1907, Krutsinger was on the committee that prepared the first list of "The Preachers of the Churches of Christ," published by the Gospel Advocate Co. He died in Bloomington, Ind., and is buried just outside Ellettsville in the Methodist cemetery. Gospel Advocate, June 2005.
