AGED MINISTER DIES THURSDAY
Rev. J. J. Excell Passes Away at Home After Long Illness.
The Rev. J. J. Excell, retired minister, died at 3.20 o'clock Thursday morning at his home on West North street, after a long illness. He had been ill for over a year, but was confined to bed only a little over a month. Death was due to bladder trouble, and he suffered much pain. Rev. Excell would have been 86 years old in October. While the aged man lay dead in his home Thursday afternoon, his daughter, Mrs. Lillian Marsh, was being placed in her grave at Chautauqua, N. Y. The daughter died late Monday. Word of her death was received here Tuesday, but the father was so seriously ill that he was told nothing of her passing away, and died in ignorance that she had preceded him to the world beyond. He was an active minister for more than 45 years. Rev. Excell was thrice married and is survived by his third wife and three children, all born during the period of his second marriage. They are as follows: Cecile, of Chautauqua, N. Y., Mrs. Lynn, of Chautauqua, and the E. O. Excell, noted musician, of East Brady, Pa.-Wooster News.

Joshua's third wife was Jane, they were married about 1888 or 1889, Joshua (74, b Oct 1825) Jane (age 69, born Dec 1831 in West Virginia- f- born in Ireland, m- born in West Virginia)was listed in the 1900 census, in that census it listed that they had been married for 12 years and Jane had no children. The 1910 census revealed that this had been his third marriage (age 84), and it had been Jane's second marriage (age 78), they were married for 21 years. In this census it asked how many children Jane had and how many were living 7/3. It was mentioned that he was at a Methodist church.
One article was found from the Summit County Beacon 9 Aug 1882, Wed, p 2
This article revealed Rev. J.J. Excell, pastor of the M.E. Church at Pleasant Valley, published a book of music in Cincinnati, "Cheering Songs". This was meant for meetings, Sunday Schools, etc., most compositions are his words and music, 80 p, approx. 82 pieces.
An obituary from the News-Journal 22 Aug 1911, Tue p 3, revealed two amazing things. The reverend was laid to rest at Reedsburg cemetery Saturday afternoon, directly under the area where he was ordained a minister of the gospel. The church had been torn down years ago, and his grave is under where the pulpit had been located.
The second was that his own children sang songs he loved, at his funeral service.
