MARTINSVILLE, Ill. -- Ansel Buckner, 89, of rural Martinsville, died at 6:30 a.m. Saturday, June 3, 2000, in his residence. He was a retired farmer. He was born Sept. 25, 1910, in rural West York in Crawford County, to Jesse Buckner and Emma Knapp Buckner. His first wife, Madge L. Cooper Buckner, died March 15, 1967. Survivors include his wife, Verlie Lingafelter Shaffner Buckner, whom he married Feb 22, 1969, two daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Dwight Peel of Martinsville, and Marilyn and Jerry Ulrey of Fort Collins, Colo., one stepdaughter, Joan Nichols and her husband Oscar of Robinson; one stepson, Arden Shaffner and his wife Diana of Annapolis; one brother, Rex Buckner of Marshall, Ill., two sisters, Madge Garling of Cedar Lake, Ind., and Mary Mickey of Terre Haute, Ind.; eight grandchildren, Janeen Rue, Scott Ulrey, Mike Flynn, Debbie Musielak, Terry Shaffner, Carla Flynn, Eric Shaffner and Steve Ulrey, eight great-grandchildren, Jim Dean, Jessica Winnett, Zachary McNeil, Kelsie McNeil, Cody Ulrey, MaKayla Shaffner, Jacob Ulrey and Wyatt Ulrey; two great-great-grandchildren, Paige Dean and Jade Dean; and several nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his parents; and a grandson, Jeffrey Ulrey. He was a very active member of the Willow Creek Cumberland Presbyterian Church, having served a number of years as an elder, Sunday School superintendent and teacher. He was also a member of Denominational Men's Fellowship and National Farmers Organization. Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday in the church in rural Martinsville, with the Rev. Kevin Small and Ronnie Gross officiating. Burial is in Butternut Cemetery, rural Martinsville. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Monday in Prust-Hosch Funeral Chapel in West Union, and one hour before services Tuesday in the church. The family suggests that, if friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to Willow Creek Cumberland Presbyterian Church, the Martinsville library, or the American Heart Association, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
