George W. Ashworth, 90, of Oriskany, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 6, 2008 at the Eastern Star Home in Oriskany.

He was born on October 30, 1917 in Oriskany a son of the late Harry and Janet (Wright) Ashworth. He was a 1936 graduate of Oriskany Central School. Mr. Ashworth served his country during World War II in the United States Army Air force as a Radio Operator in a B-17 with the 303 Rd. Bombardment Group, and flew 25 missions over Germany and France.

On April 7, 1945 in St. Peter's Church in Oriskany he married Marilynn Bolton a blessed union of over 63 years. He was employed as a supervisor for H. Waterbury in Oriskany for most of his life retiring in 1981.

Mr. Ashworth was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Whitesboro, he also was a volunteer fireman for the Oriskany Fire Department, and a member of the American Legion Post 1448 Oriskany, the Oriskany Hills Golf Club, and the Stanwix Veterans Men's Club. He loved music and played the Trombone in the Oriskany Band, the Clark Mills Band, and the Red Band of Utica, he also enjoyed playing the Banjo. He was the President on the Oriskany Cemetery Board. Mr. Ashworth was an avid golfer, who loved spending time with his two grandsons, teaching them the finer points of the game.

He is survived by his wife Marilynn of 63 years, his daughter Janet Nellenbach and her husband Mark of PA, a son Brian Ashworth and his wife Katherine of Darien Center, NY, his two grandsons, Adam Ashworth of Darien Center, NY and Justin Ashworth of Baldwinsville, NY., also several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three sisters, Edith Silverman, Nellie Bannister, and Esther Krumm, also two brothers Harry and James Ashworth.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 10:00 AM at the Dimbleby, Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral Home 40 Main St. Whitesboro with Rev. John Lavoe of St. John's Episcopal Church officiating. Interment will be in Oriskany Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to call on Wednesday from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the funeral home.
