James Baker was born in North Petherwin, Devonshire, Eng, 17 Feb 1850, the son of John and Grace Bone Baker. When six weeks of age his family moved to America where they settled in Wisconsin. In 1869 he purchased some land in Dewitt co. where he had since made his home.
He was married to Miss Ella Edwards 20 Oct 1887, and to this union three children were born, two of whom still survive. Mrs. Julia Gray and one son, Edwin Ernest.
He was a member of Odd Fellows, Knights of Pythias and Modern Woodman.
Funeral services were conducted from the M.E. church in Clinton. Internment was in Woodlawn cemetery.
