Stephen Harrison Melton

Stephen married Eliza Moore 9 Dec 1855, Worth County, Georgia. The couple had six children.
Stephen and Elizabeth Melton appear in the 1860, 1870, 1880 and 1900 Census records of Twiggs. County. Stephen was a farmer. Ancestry.com shows Stephen Melton as a slaveowner, but no Census has been found to support this.

Private, enlisted April 29, 1863 in Macon, Georgia by Captain Massey. Present for all musters from June 30, 1863 until February 29, 1864 except as noted. On 30 days furlough since December 19, 1863. Clothing Receipt 5 May 1864. Sick in Hospital Augusta, Georgia September 16, 1864. Captured December 16, 1864 at Nashville, Tennessee and forwarded to Louisville, Kentucky December 19, 1864. Discharged to Camp Douglas December 21, 1864. Discharged June 19, 1865.

S.H. Melton
Macon, Georgia, August 7—(Special)—Stephen H. Melton, a pioneer citizen of Bibb, living on Stone Creek, a short distance out of the city, died at his home at an early hour this morning. He had been forty-five years a member of the Stone Creek Baptist Church and was a veteran, having fought in southern ranks through the Civil War. He is survived by a wife and six children. His sons are: Messrs. B.D., H.M. and C.A. Melton, and his daughters are: Miss Lucile Melton and Mrs. S.L. Sims of Douglas. The funeral occurred this afternoon.
