Blazing Gas Line Leak Blamed in Child's Death
Fire Had Been Lighted in Yard, Says Mother
A leaking gas line was blamed Thursday by Mrs. John Sanders for the death of her 3-year-old daughter, Florence Jean, who died late Wednesday of burns received while playing at her home east of the city last Thursday.
A small leak had opened in the gas line in the back yard of the Sanders home and had been lighted by other children playing there.
Florence Jean, her 5-year-old sister Flora Mae and her niece Nancy Lee Burris, were in the yard when the child was burned. She ran screaming, her dress in flames, to the front yard of the house, a distance of about 50 feet, before her mother could catch her and extinguish the flames.
The child was taken to Samaritan Hospital where she died late Wednesday.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at the Eastern Avenue Baptist Church. Burial will be in Sunnylane cemetery with the Hunter funeral home in charge.
