L. J. Upton, 74, of Corsicana died Sept. 9 at his residence.
Pvt. L. J. Upton, was the son of Silas L. and Lula Jane Rowland Upton. He was born in Laverny, Arkansas. His mother, Lula Jane passed away while giving birth to him. The first couple years of his life he was cared for by Flora Jane Rowland Clenney, until his father came to pick him up and take him to Kentucky.
He was a graduate of Kentucky High School and entered the Army, 1940, trained at Ft. Knox, KY, Ft. Sill, OK, Camp Edwards, MA, and Camp Chaffee, Arkansas. During World War II he served in the 82nd Air Born Division, serving in England, France, and Belgium, and Germany. He was a former Corsicana Police Officer and was retired from Chattanooga Glass.
Mr. Upton is survived by his wife, Ella Bell Woods Upton of Corsicana; son, Harless Jay Upton of Abilene; and 2 grandchildren.
Services were held at the Griffin-Roughton Chapel with Bill Honea officiating. Pallbearers are Doug Hightower, Billy Brackeen, Ed Johnson, Lewis Palos, Thomas Dockery, Danny Owens, and Allen Dean Woods. Burial was at Resthaven Memorial Park.
