Sarah Breen McGowan was born at Portage, the daughter of Daniel and Sarah McGinn Breen. At the age of 13 the family moved to Minneapolis where she lived for two years before coming to Stevens County in 1879, when members of her family established a claim south of Hancock. She had attended parochial schools at Portage and Minneapolis, and at the age of 16 became the first teacher in school district No. 31, in Stevens County when that district was organized in 1880. The 50th anniversary of the event was celebrated in 1930 and Mrs. McGowan, as the first teacher, and three of her students were honored guests at that occasion.

On August 31, 1881, she was married to Patrick McGowan by Father Watry at Morris, and for the next six months the newlyweds made their home on the groom's farm in Tara township before going to Benson to make their home. In 1884 she moved to Kerkhoven where she lived until 1891 when the family again returned to Benson. Mr. McGowan died at Benson on December 7, 1899.

She moved to Appleton in 1914, and except for two years, during which she made her home at Crookston and Minneapolis, she remained in Appleton until her death. Her death was due to arteriosclerosis and came after an illness of nine weeks. Her daughter and five of her six sons were at her bedside when the end came.

Mrs. McGowan was the senior member of the Degree of Honor lodge of Benson; a member and for a number of years historian of the Appleton unit of the American Legion Auxiliary; president of the Appleton League of Women Voters during its activity, and active in local Red Cross work during the World war period.
