In the year 1871 he came to this country in company with his brother Charles, and a cousin, Harry Wortley. After visiting friends around Chicago a few days, he came to the vicinity of Brook, where he spent the rest of his life.
On February 18, 1875, he was united in marriage at Brook, Ind., with Mrs. Ellen Hewson Nichols of Orland, Illinois. To this union nine children were born. Two of the sons, William and Robert, and one daughter, Olive Rose, preceeded him in death.
The family resided on their farm until December 1934, when they removed to Brook. Last February he and his wife celebrated their fifty-eighth wedding aniversary.
He had three brothers and one sister, but one brother is now living, who resides in England.
He was a very honest man, a good neighbor, a loving husband and a great believer in prayer and the Bible He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, with which he united July 22nd, 1906, under the pastorate of Rev. C.B. Stanforth.
He is survived by his wife, four daughters, Mary Barger of Chicago Heights, Illinois; Emma Newson of Dickinson, North Dakota; Bertha Ford of Barberton, Ohio; Myrtle Bixler of Chicago, Illinois, and two sons, Charles T. of Rensselaer, Ind.; Fred of Remington, Ind.; and a stepson, Wallace Nichols of Wellsboro, Indiana; also seventeen grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren.
