Ray Abney was the son of William Luther Abney and Maude Victoria Williams. He was married first to Jo Ballard in 1946 and they had four children. He married 2ndly Ernistine Heaton on 25 Nov 1977.

LaFAYETTE - Garnet "Ray" Abney, 84, went home to be with the Lord and Savior on Saturday, May 9, 2009, surrounded by his family at his residence.

He was born Dec. 20, 1924, in LaFayette, to the late William Luther and Maude Williams Abney.

He was preceded in death by his siblings, Blanche Kimbell, Dennis Abney, W.L. Abney, Mary Ella Smith, Ross Abney and Fredia Poole.

He was employed at Combustion Engineering in Chattanooga for many years before becoming manager of the men's department at Abney's Department Store in LaFayette. He had served as a city councilman and mayor pro tem for the city of LaFayette for several years. He was a member of the LaFayette Optimist Club for several years and had served as several officers positions as well as president. He had served as the North Georgia Governor for Optimist International. Ray was a member of LaFayette First Baptist Church, where he had taught the twelve-year-old boys class and enjoyed singing in the choir.

He is survived by his wife, Ernestine Abney; children and their spouses, LaRaye Ely, Dale and Bill Young, Terry and Sandra Abney, Jill and Kent Wallace; along with many loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His surviving sisters are Martha (Bill) Fricks, Virginia Ezell and Myra (Jerry) Wilhelm, and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends today from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 13, 2009, at LaFayette First Baptist Church with the Rev. Cecil Bryant, Dr. Todd Gaddis and Dr. Warren Morehead officiating.

Pallbearers will be Grady Smith, Gary Smith, Steve Ezell, Heath Hinkle, Brett Marlin, Dale Pack and Joseph Unjakoti.

Honorary pallbearers will be the Masters Sunday School Class, Dr. Ted Scoggins and Countryside Hospice.

Burial will follow in LaFayette Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in Ray's memory to the Music Department of LaFayette First Baptist Church.

Arrangements are by the LaFayette Chapel of Wilson Funeral Homes, LaFayette.
