Of Tenmile, Oregon, passed away on Tuesday, October 6, 2009, at the age of 62, after a long battle with cancer. He was born in Loma Linda, California, on June 20, 1947 to Louis and Elizabeth (Warren) Stewart and was raised in Yucaipa, California. He and his family moved to Winston, Oregon, in 1979. Rick was a life-long handyman and would do anything he could to help family and friends. He worked in Douglas County as a contractor and as a realtor at Currieco Real Estate for many years. He loved the outdoors especially hunting and fishing. On September 1, 1991, Rick was united in marriage to Diana Coombe. His true passion was his family; especially his grandchildren. He loved spending time with them and passing on his knowledge. He also had a very unique sense of humor. Rick was a member of a number of veteran organizations. He was most active in the Roseburg Chapter 805 Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter. He was a member of the Douglas County Veteran's Advisory Council which serves as a liaison between the Douglas County Veterans Service Office and the Douglas County Commissioners and for many years organized the Roseburg Veteran's Day Parade. In this capacity he oversaw many issues that improved the quality of service given to Douglas County veterans. During Advisory Board meetings Rick had the unique ability to address agenda items in a common sense manner that proved invaluable to the improvement of the service provided to veterans seeking assistance for the submission of medical claims to the Veteran's Administration, and for this many veterans owe him a debt of gratitude. Rick was instrumental in the success of the 2006 Veteran's Day Parade which honored Vietnam Veterans as the Grand Marshals. Rick volunteered many hours during preparations for "Welcome Home" efforts of the community for the Roseburg National Guard members following their deployments. He worked hard to insure that veterans would never again be neglected and demeaned for service in the military as he and his fellow Vietnam Veterans were upon return from the war. He was also a member of the Elks Lodge #326 of Roseburg. He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter Neilie. Rick is survived by his loving wife, Diana of Tenmile; his daughter and four sons and their spouses, Natalie and Dean of Roseburg; Chad and Brandy of Roseburg; Dave and Kim of Central Point, Oregon; Daniel and Ramona of Winston; Devon and Rosemary of Bend, Oregon, and sister, Marion and Mike of Yucaipa. He leaves 14 grandchildren, Shay, Jordan, McKenzie, Ethan, Mariah, Shelsea, Noah, Isaiah, Grace, Jack, Elizabeth, Levi, Angela, Mike, and also his best friend of 40 plus years, Jerry Frost of Yucaipa, California, and "Mama", Mary Gaulke of Long Beach, Washington. Graveside services will be held at the Roseburg VA National Cemetery on Friday, October 16, 2009, at 1 p.m. Officiating will be Chief Warrant Officer, James Little, former Commander at the Coos Bay Naval Base. Military rites will be offered by the VFW District Twelve Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Amedysis Hospice Services of Roseburg, 541-440-2583. Arrangements are under the direction of Taylor's Family Mortuary
