Louis was the son of Ludwig and Louise Schwartfiger Grube. He immigrated to America with his entire family in 1860. His family was one of the pioneer German families to settle in Sheboygan.

Louis was a cooper by trade (barrel maker) and served as the first marshall for the city of Sheboygan. He married Henrietta Hildebrand on November 12, 1870 and they had eight children. They were Louis, Henry, Ernst, Edward, Albert, Theodore, Mathilda and Wilhelmine.

Louis died from complications of diabetes.
