LEOTA ADELE LYONS

Leota Adele Lyons, 95, Columbia, formerly of Nevada, passed away from this life Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at Columbia (MO) Manor, where she had made her home for the past 14 years. She was born Sept. 7, 1906, in Lexington, NE, the second of eight children to Harvey D. Vilott and Ethel Izora Shivley Vilott.

After moving to Nevada, she worked in the railroad office for a number of years. It was in Nevada that she met her baseball player, George T. Lyons. On April 22, 1929, Leota and George were married in Nashville, TN, and lived on a farm southwest of Nevada until they moved into town in 1946. George preceded her in death on Aug. 12, 1981. Leota was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and Nevada baseball supporter/fan.

Survivors include one son, George T. Lyons-Columbia and two daughters, Sally G. Darnell-El Dorado Springs and Zona N. Gates-Springfield; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband of 52 years, she was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers, one sister, and a son-in-law, Kenneth W. Gates.

Private graveside services were held on Friday, Jan. 4, at Newton Burial Park, Nevada with John Nichols officiating.

Memorials are suggested to the George T. Lyons Stadium in care of Ferry Funeral Home, 301 S. Washington, Nevada, MO 64772.
