Albert was born in Santa Clara, California, the oldest of the four children of Swiss and German immigrants, John Henry Baer, a carpenter, and his wife, Louisa. Following Albert's discharge from the Navy he worked as a blacksmith and lived in Reno, Nevada. He reenlisted in the Navy on March 23, 1917, a couple weeks before the US declared war on Germany. He died a month after his 38th birthday. Per his obituary, Albert Baer was a prominent citizen in Reno, and the Nevada Attorney General, Leonard Burke Fowler, a native of Visalia, California, delivered the eulogy, with an honor guard from the United Spanish War Veterans delivering a gun salute.
