Claude Melville Freer, 102 of Cooperstown, ND, formerly of Hannaford, ND passed away Wednesday, September 23, 2009 in the Cooperstown Medical Center Nursing Home where he had been a resident since October of 2006.

Claude was born October 19, 1906 the son of Parke and Goldie Kimmel (Key) Freer on a farm north of Hannaford, ND. His grandfather Jonas Freer was one of the original settlers in Broadview Twsp., in 1887. When Claude was 2 years old the family moved to a homestead near Lemmon, SD and lived in a sod house. In 1918 they moved to Wenatchee, WA to be near Goldie's family. They returned to the Hannaford area in 1922.

In 1937 he met and married Myrtle Bakken. Times were hard and Claude and some friends traveled west to Washington looking for work and then south to Phoenix, AZ where he found work on the Bartlett Dam. When the job ended he returned to the Hannaford area where they farmed near Walum and Revere. In 1945 they bought the Walum Store and lived above the store for two years, living in Walum until 1998 when they moved to Hannaford. Claude worked for Crane Johnson Lumber for 25 years, retiring at the age of 65. He had two bosses during that time, Henry Swingen and Paul Vance. After his retirement from Crane Johnson he did carpenter work and for 12 years managed the Stri-King Lanes, retiring for a second time at age 80.

In his spare time he loved to fish on Lake Ashtabula with Myrtle or various buddies. Football was his favorite sport and he was known to watch one game on TV and listen to another on the radio. Shortly after his 100th birthday in 2006 he and Myrtle moved to Cooperstown Medical Center Nursing Home. Myrtle passed away October 2008 after 71 years of marriage.

He is survived by two daughters, Carole McKinney, Irvine, CA, Claudia (Jim) Jacobsen, Luverne, ND; a brother, Bert Freer, Anaconda, MT; a sister, Pat Ernst, Brooklyn Park, MN; grandchildren, Darcey (Don) Kosolofski, Hope, ND, Clay (Jessica) Jacobsen, Luverne, ND, Greg (Ruby) McKinney, Irvine, CA and great grandchildren; Brady Jacobsen, Kada Kosolofski, Mara Jacobsen, Kennedy Jacobsen, Greg McKinney Jr. and Lee McKinney.

Memorial Services will be held Wednesday, September 30, 2009 at 2:00 pm in the Faith Lutheran Church in Hannaford, ND.
