The youngest child of Charles Heinrich "Carl" Gerling and Anna Friederike "Caroline" Niehaus, Louis was baptized "Franz Heinrich Ludwig Gerling" on 22 Jan 1888 at Salem Lutheran Church in Black Jack, St. Louis County, Missouri. His sponsors were Franz Niehaus, Heinrich Gerling and Heinrich Kralemann.

Louis married Ella Bergfeld on 30 Oct 1912 at Salem Lutheran Church. He was a farmer in north St. Louis County, and they were the parents of at least 5 children.

At the time of his death, Louis was 88 years and 18 days old.

He was survived by his wife, Ella; 4 sons, Louis Gerling, Melvin Gerling, Harry Gerling and Alfred Gerling; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; 1 sister, Alvina Albers; and many extended family members.

In addition to his mother and father, Louis was preceded in death by 1 son, George Gerling; and 3 siblings who died in early childhood.

Visitation was held on 05 Jan 1976 at math Hermann and Son's Chapel on Halls Ferry Road in north St. Louis County. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. that afternoon at Salem Lutheran Church.

The family requested that memorials, if desired, be made to the church building fund.

Louis' wife, Ella, passed away in 1996 at the age of 100.
