Michael Abbett, 14, shot and killed his father, Minneapolis architect Loren B. Abbett, last April 26 because he "was tired of being reprimanded." The shooting, in the kitchen of the Abbett home in Edina, followed an argument over use of the family car. The boy was sent to Glenwood Hills Hospital for psychiatric tests. In June he was adjudged insane and committed to the state hospital in St. Peter, Minnesota. [The experts decided he suffered from schizophrenia.]

CONTRIBUTOR'S THOUGHTS: When Michael was very young, he and his father were very close and always loved each other. Michael apparently had intellectual, mental, emotional, and behavioral disabilities and physical awkwardness that his father often didn't understand or treat appropriately.

Michael did poorly in school but had an aptitude for mechanical things and loved cars. He couldn't legally drive a car until he was 15 but sometimes took the family car without permission, driving it up and down the street.

Michael was quick to lose his temper and sometimes displayed inappropriate reactions. He was often teased and ridiculed by schoolmates.

Some of Michael's behaviors seem to fit in the autism spectrum disorder (ASD), specifically Asperger syndrome. Though ASD and Asperger syndrome were identified in the 1940's, it was many years before they were widely recognized, studied, and understood.
