John Thomas "J. T." James, a banker, was the son of Dr. William Harrison James and Lucy Ann (Wade) James.

Under his father's guidance he studied pharmacy and medicine. On February 5, 1876, he came to Hamilton and opened a drugstore with Z. C. Law. In 1877 they added banking to their drugstore which had a safe.

J. T. James married Mary T. Bouldin in September, 1879.

In 1890 the bank was nationalized with Dr. George F. Perry as president and James as vice-president. Following the death of Dr. Perry, J. T. James became the President and his sons, Cecil Bouldin and Malcolm Gillespie James, joined his business enterprises.

J. T. James was a member of St. Marys Episcopal Church. He also was State Vice-President of the American Banking Association and a Mason.

On August 17, 1921, James married Miss Sarah Secrest.
