Inscription

Son of Robert and Rachel Linneken. He was a member of Co. K, 20th Reg't, Maine Vols., participating in the battle of Antietum, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg and the Wilderness where he was wounded May 5th and taken prisoner. After a captivity of 37 days on the battlefield he was retaken by our Calvary and carried to Alexandria, where he died from amputation of left foot. He enlisted July 22nd, 1862 from a sense of duty and left the dear associations of home to give his life if necessary for the cause of Freedom. He was a faithful and brave soldier as he had ever been an affectionate son and brother.
