Rita J. Cornwell, 76, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2006, at Flagler Hospital. She was born in Akron, Ohio, and had lived in St. Augustine since 1965, moving here from Fort Lauderdale.

Mrs. Cornwell owned and operated Cornwell's Market with her husband, Russell Cornwell, Sr., since 1985, and formerly owned and operated Russell's Chevron on Anastasia Island. Rita had been involved in local politics in St. Johns for many years, having served as a St. Augustine City Commissioner. She was currently serving as vice chairperson of the Anastasia Mosquito Control Board of Commissioners.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. today at McDowell Baptist Church with the Rev. Clarence Blalock, pastor officiating.

She is survived by a son, Russell Cornwell Jr.; daughters, Kathy Zimmer, Cindy Hutto, Karen Cornwell, all of St. Augustine; a sister, Dorothy Nester of Akron, Ohio; grandchildren, Steven Solana, Heidi Hardy, Randi Hardy, Christopher Hutto; great-grandchildren, Zoe Hardy and Katelynn Hardy.
