On June 17, 1905, he and his younger, 18 year-old brother, Thomas C., were traveling as railroad laborers on a Western Maryland Rail Road train which was in a crash with a freight train. Thomas was killed and James died days after the crash from his injuries.
The daughter James never saw was Hennie C. Benner Marshall.
