Florence Joseph Derse was born as Florant Joseph Dersé. His parents (Antoine and Catherine) came from France and immigrated to the United States and settled in Wisconsin.

Florant Joseph Dersé was also known as "George". His name is French and when pronounced it sounds like "Florence" which is why in a few US Censuses his name is written as Florence. He is also found in a couple of US Censuses as "George."

Florant moved with his brother Anthony to Kansas and set up a store business. The two brothers married their spouses in Cloud County, Kansas. They both married Moore sisters. Florant married Lydia Ellen Moore (born 11 June 1859 in Fillmore, Iowa). They married on 13 March 1878 in Clyde, Cloud, Kansas. Lydia went by the nickname of "Ella".

Florant and Ella had 6 children, but most of them died very young. Charles, Florence, and Frank are the only children that lived to adulthood. Cora May Derse's death announcement is in the "Farmer's Voice" newspaper. The infant son's (child #3) death announcement is found in the Belleville Telescope newspaper. It doesn't list the infant son's name. It states the following: "Mr. & Mrs. F. J. Derse have the sympathy of their many friends in the loss of an infant son, which died Sept. 10th."

Listed are the following known children of Florant and Lydia Derse:

1. CHARLES LOUIS DERSE (born 17 August 1879 in Clyde, Cloud, Kansas).

2. CORA MAY DERSE (born 24 May 1883 in Clyde, Cloud, Kansas; died 16 May 1884)

3. Infant son (born 1885; died 10 September 1885 in Belleville, Republic, Kansas)

4. FLORENCE ELLEN DERSE (born 19 November 1898 in Colorado).

5. FRANK GEORGE DERSE (born 14 December 1900 in Pueblo, Pueblo, Colorado; died 9 March 1963 in Imola, Napa, CA).

About 1893 or 1894, Florant took his family from Kansas and moved to Pueblo, Colorado. His wife died almost 10 years later in 1903 from pneumonia. In March of 1914, Florant went to visit his brother Anthony Derse in Elk Township, Clyde, Cloud, Kansas for a 2 week visit. But he became very ill. A doctor attended him from April 10 through May 8, 1914. On the following day, May 9th at 7 a.m. Florence passed away at his brother's home. Florant was buried in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Clyde, Cloud, Kansas. However, his wife is buried in Pueblo, Colorado in the family plot. Both Florant and Ella are buried in unmarked graves. Florant's obituary is found in the Farmer's Voice newspaper on page 1 in the May 14, 1914 issue.

Florant was buried on 11 May 1914.
