John Henry Anderson was the son of Mason Anderson and Jayne M. (Baylis) Anderson. He married Ann Mary Ridings on 11 December 1851 in Frederick County, Virginia. Ann Mary Ridings was born on 19 October 1834 in Middletown, Frederick, Virginia.

John and Ann had six children: Lilla Virginia Anderson, Emma F. Anderson, Mary Alice Anderson, James Warren Anderson, Johnny F. Anderson, and Cora Belle Anderson.

John enlisted in the Civil War in Company D, Virginia 6th Calvary Regiment on 7 October 1862 in Berryville, Virginia by Captain Richards for 3 years. He was a Confederate soldier.
