Services: A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, November 14, 2009 10 a.m., at Sacred Heart Church, 26 Wintonbury Avenue, Bloomfield, CT.

Burial, with Military Honors, will be in Mount St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield.
Visitation: His family will receive friends on Friday, 4-8 p.m., at the church.

James E. Byrne Sr., 85, of Bloomfield, CT passed away Sunday morning (November 8, 2009). Jim was born on October 27, 1924 in Chattanooga, TN, son of the late Bernard Patrick and Alpha May (Broome) Byrne. After the death of his parents, he and his late brother, Bernard Patrick, lived with their Uncle Charles and Aunt Marie Chumley.
He graduated from Notre Dame High School and attended Kirkman Business College in Chattanooga, TN. James was employed at Combustion Engineering Company in Chattanooga, TN and was transferred to New York City in 1956 where Combustion installed the first 650 computer. From New York, he went on to New Jersey and finally in 1960 Combustion moved the computer center to Windsor, CT, where he retired in July, 1985 after 42 years. Jim was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Bloomfield, CT and became involved in the committee for building the present Sacred Heart Church. Jim was a member and past president of the Serra Club of Hartford, CT, past president of Sacred Heart Home School Association and past Chairman of the Parish Council. He was a member of the Finance Committee, Trustee of Sacred Heart and worked with CYO after arriving in Bloomfield, CT. Jim also coached Little League Baseball in Bloomfield, CT for 13 years. He chaired the food booth at the Sacred Heart carnival for many years and chaired the Retired Priest Luncheon held at Saint Thomas Seminary every year. He was a Eucharist Minister and recipient of the Saint Joseph Medal at the Cathedral. Jim was a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus and was in the 117th Infantry of the 30th Division in World War II, where he received the Bronze Star for bravery. He was discharged from the U. S. Army in 1945.

He is survived by his wife, Josephine of 59 years, and their four children, James E. Byrne Jr. and his wife Janet of Chattanooga, TN, Josephine Quintana and her husband Matthew of West Simsbury, CT, Mary Patricia Byrne of Brandon, FL and John Francis Byrne of Bloomfield, CT. He also leaves his four grandchildren, Matthew Ryan and Brendan James Quintana, Hannah Maureen Byrne and Natasha Patricia Trudell.
