Della Bennett
Della Bennett, of Columbia, died Thursday, March 29, 2007. She was 81.
Ms. Bennett was born May 1, 1925, to Marvin and Gertrude Forsee Bennett in Boone County.
She lived in California with her sister Bennie Maloney for most of her life. She worked as a meat packer for Von's Market. When Maloney died five years ago, Ms. Bennett moved to Columbia to live with her sister.
In her spare time, she enjoyed playing the slots, listening to Johnny Cash and watching John Wayne movies.
"She knew them all," said Ms. Bennett's niece, referring to the John Wayne movies. "She really didn't have a favorite. Word for word, she could tell you before they (were going to) say it. Didn't matter how old the movie was, she knew it."
None of Ms. Bennett's family knew her as Della; they all just called her "Red" because of her hair.
"We take after each other quite a bit," the niece said. "She had her own way. Red was just Red."
Ms. Bennett is survived by her brother, her two sisters, 15 nieces; and eight nephews.
Three brothers, James, Billy and Buddy Bennett; and one sister, Bennie Maloney, died earlier.
Visitation will be at 1 p.m. today at Nilson Funeral Home, 5611 St. Charles Road. Services, conducted by the Rev. John Fussner, will be at 2 p.m. today. Burial will be at Columbia Cemetery.
