James was the son of James and Bridget (Donoghue) Doherty. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1846. James served in the Civil War, enlisting May 2, 1861 in Rochester, New York. He was discharged May 28, 1863 in Utica, New York having been in Companies G and M of the 26th NY Infantry and the 1st NY Volunteer Cavalry. Around 1881 he married a widow, Elizabeth Maxim, they reside in Gaines, Orleans Co., New York at least from 1900 to 1915. They had one daughter together. They likely moved to Spencerport before James' death in 1919.
