Mother Dies, Son is Killed
Mrs. Amelia Banning, 74, widow of John A. Banning, Lavelle, died at the
Ashland Hospital Saturday ( June 9, 1945), unaware that her son Staff Sgt Stanley Banning, 45, formerly of Lavelle, had been fatally injured in a head-on collision at Denver, Colorado, last Wednesday, (June 6, 1945).
Mrs. Banning in failing health for 15 years, was admitting to the hospital last Monday. Her husband died 13 years ago. Mrs. Banning, the former Amelia Hepler, was born in Mahantongo Valley, a daughter of the late Chas. and Catherine (Love) Hepler. She spent most of her life in Lavelle,
where she was a member of Christ Evangelical Church and the Daughters of America.
Funeral services Tuesday afternoon with a short service at her home, followed by additional services at the Christ Evangelical Church, Lavelle. Rev Jas G Reed, pastor of the church officiating. Burial in Citizen's Cemetery, Huntersville.
Surviving are the following children; Frank A Banning, Lavelle; Mrs. Robert
Kleese, Girardville; Curtis E Banning, Tamaqua; Mrs. John Lorraine, Lavelle; Clayton Banning, Sch. Haven; Charles E Smith, Mowry, and Mrs. Walter Klingerman, Locust Gap, a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, one sister Mrs. Fred Lunt, and four brothers, Chas Hepler, Elias Hepler, Lewis Hepler,all of Lavelle and Edward Hepler, Locust Dale.
In the telegram received by relatives concerning the death of Staff Sgt Banning not much information was given, only that he met death in an accident, and that a fellow passenger riding in the car was seriously injured.
The body of the Sergeant was claimed by his wife who resided at Riverside, California.
Funeral services were held at Riverside and burial was made there.
Staff Sgt Banning together with his family visited Lavelle nine years ago and the last time that relatives saw him was a year ago, last Christmas, when he was a patient at the Halloran General Hospital, Staten Island, NY, for a wounds of the knee received in the invasion of Sicily.
While at March Field, California, he was married to a former Massachusetts girl, transferred to Colorado, he was sent overseas and took part in the invasions of N Africa and Sicily.
Surviving are his widow, three sons, Roy 13, Raymond, 9, and Ronald 5, and the above brothers and sisters.

Mrs. Amelia Banning, 74, of Lavelle, died at 1:10 am today in Ashland State Hospital. In failing health the past 15 years, she was admitted to the hospital last Monday for medical treatment.
Mrs. Banning, the former Amelia Hepler, was born in the Mahantongo Valley, August 17, 1870, a daughter of the late Charles and Catherine (Love) Hepler. She spent most of her life in Lavelle where she was a member of Christ Evangelical Church and the Daughters of America.
She was the widow of John A. Banning, who died 13 years ago.
Surviving are six children, Frank A. Banning, of Lavelle, Mrs. Robert Klees, of Girardville, Curtis Banning, of Tamaqua, Mrs. Margaret Larine, of Lavelle, Clayton Banning, of Schuylkill Haven, and Stanley Banning, of California; two step-children, Charles E. Smith, of Mowry, and Mrs. Walter Klingerman, of Locust Gap; three sisters and two brothers, Mrs. Fred Lunt, Mrs. Charles Hepler, Mrs. Elias Hepler, Lewis Hepler, all of Lavelle, and Edward Hepler, of Locust Dale.
