"King of Olive Oil" G.B. Levaggi arrived in California from his hometown of Lucca in 1865. For eight years, he mined for gold. In 1873, he established a fruit commission company, Levaggi and Barbiera. After a visit to Lucca in 1894, Levaggi returned to San Francisco and launched the Levaggi Import Company, which featured olive oil from Lucca. He supplied most firms on the Pacific Coast with this well-known product. Many Italian groceries across the United States stocked Lucca brand olive oil.
