Ernest Welborn was born in 1880 in Indiana, the son of John Alva Welborn and Alice Anna Connor. His family moved to Grand Traverse County in 1881 and he attended local schools. Eernest was married on 20 May 1903 in Grand Traverse County to Jennie Blanche Cole.

The couple operated a farm in Garfield township, Grand Traverse County. Their only daughter, Alice, was born in 1913. During the 1920s, the family collected stones that were used to cover the exterior of their home on North Long Lake Road.

Ernest did not have a happy marriage. Blanche was a domineering and angry woman. One story that has survived is that Ernest had to read books out in the barn, since Blanche did not like him to read in the house. Things grew worse after Alice had an illegitimate child. Blanche's died in 1932. Ernest died in 1937 from tuberculosis and pneumonia.
