Ernest did not have a happy marriage. Blanche was a domineering and angry woman. One story that has survived is that Ernest had to read books out in the barn, since Blanche did not like him to read in the house. Things grew worse after Alice had an illegitimate child. Blanche's died in 1932. Ernest died in 1937 from tuberculosis and pneumonia.
